Ionia 1890. The initial 100 members of the music club "Orpheus" decide to expand their activities into Greek culture, with sports activities for boys and adolescents in the general area of Smyrni. As the Greek element is very intense and active in the borders of Asia Minor, the subscriptions of new members are impressive. Thus, Panionios of Smyrni was born, based in the largest port of Smyrni and during the first year numbered more than 1000 members.
Smyrni 1922. The beautiful Smyrni beach is on fire and the destruction of the Greek population of Asia Minor stops any kind of activities for Panionios. The honorary president of the club, Chryssostomos of Smyrni is no longer with the people of Smyrni that arrive in the Greek motherland by the hundreds, who amongst their few worldly possessions they have the spirit in establishing Panionios Neas Smyrnis. The football team is once again in operation and participates in the first post-war Athens championship attracting one thousand fans in each "blue and red" game. As the years went by, Panionios brought forward players of international stature whose names still echo in the ears of younger generations. Who can forget the "hero of Tampere", the memorable Nikos Pentzaropoulos, Nikos Zarkadis, Fotis Tsolias, Thanasis Saravakos, Staikos and Tsounikas from the 50's, Kyriakos Kazantzidis, Stathis Haitas, Giorgos and Yiannis Giannakopoulos, Stelios Sohos, the Papoulias brothers from the 60's, Achileas Athanasoulas, Victor Theofilopoulos, Giorgos Skrekis, Giorgos Dedes from the 70's, and dozen of other players.
The majority of Nea Smyrni is responsible for the management of PAE Panionios as of the 1992-1993 season, and has had a major contribution to the rejuvenation of the team. The majority of Nea Smyrni decided to manage Panionios based on historical and social reasons, knowing well its long history, while it has an unbreakable historical link with the largest athletic ambassador of the city. |
